Ant Control

Why do I have ants?

That's actually a more complex question than you might think
lets use carpenter ants as our example
As they are the most damaging and common ants encountered

It has everything to do with environment and your house is just another part of theirs

We have our homes built into what I call "green neighborhoods"
all our homes and neighborhoods are divided by small wood lots which in turn are habitat for many creatures

In the case of carpenter ants
Ants are social insects that live in colonies or nests usually located in the soil near the house foundation, under concrete slabs, in crawlspaces, in structural wood, in the yard or garden, in trees and in other protected places. Ants have three castes, namely queens, males and workers. Queens and males are the reproductives. Workers are sterile wingless females. New ant colonies are started by a single fertilized queen that lays eggs and tends her brood (larvae and pupae) that develop into worker ants. Tending of the brood is then taken over by the worker, which may shift the brood from place to place as moisture and temperature fluctuate in the nest. When workers forage for food for the queen and her young, they often may enter houses and become a nuisance by their presence and contaminate food.

When an ant colony reaches a certain size it releases its expendable members into the environment as reproductives or "winged ants" also referred to as swarming
when two of these reproductives find each other they mate and lose their wings and one will become a queen she will crawl into a moist location and begin laying eggs and start the cycle all over

If you have winged ants in your home this could be a more serious problem
It is a sure sign of colonization and also those "flying ants" could in fact be termite swarmers

Because a queen needs a certain amount of relative humidity in the material she lays the eggs
an ant colony inside a structure is a certain sign of ongoing moisture issue such as leaking pipes, damp crawl space, ice damming
saturated wood on the shady side of the house, improperly installed gutters or drip edge , no drip edge, or outright leaks in the roof or flashing and wood below grade

Carpenter ants do not actually eat wood they remove the pulpy sections to expand their living space
mysterious piles of sawdusts littered with little black pellets are a sign of ants destroying your homes structure

Queenless satilite colonys do not need wet wood to make their nest

Another reason ants are in your home is because they are foraging for food
once ant worker locate a food source they communicate to other workers and will regularly forage in that area
Foraging ants travel from colonies in a straight line along a corner board or power line
they come across tree branches and power lines and the source can be difficult to determine

So, now you know a little about ants

Our services include

Pesticide development has come a long way in recent years, We are very conscience of the chemicals we use
Therefore we prefer nonrepellant low dose material which carry a great deal of "transferance"
this extremly effective system allows for the least amount of chemical possible

Ant Alert: On The March To Invade Our Home, Yard

Are the dreaded red fire ants marching one by one into your life? That could be the case, as they are among more than 20 varieties of ants that invade or live in homes throughout the country during warmer months. Ants can even live inside year-round if there is adequate heat.

Some ants are truly destructive, such as fire ants and carpenter ants. Then there are honey ants that live outdoors but troop inside regularly for food. Pharaoh's ants never go outside. Other common pests are the odorous house ant, the Argentine ant, and the thief ant.

All ants, destructive or not, share one trait in common: They're unsightly and contaminate food. You definitely want to get rid of these pests quickly.

The imported winged red fire ant is a good example of one you really don't want anywhere close by. A native of Argentina, the imported winged red fire ant began hanging out in the U.S. in the 1930s, when they were accidentally introduced into the country from a dock in Mobile, Ala. Since then, the pest has spread easily throughout the South and Southwest, and in recent years has infested Southern California.

Millions of dollars are being spent to eradicate fire ants alone. In Orange County, Calif., county supervisors in January approved using $6 million in state funds over five years to wipe out fire ants, which now infest more than 500 square miles of the county.

Fire ants are vicious, unrelenting predators with a powerful, painful sting. According to Kenneth Ross, a fire ant expert from the University of Georgia, the ants can be vicious if accidentally disturbed, and each ant can sting repeatedly.

Animals or humans unfortunate enough to blunder into fire ant nests are instantly attacked by hundreds of fire ants. At least 32 deaths in the U.S. are the result of severe allergic reactions to fire ant stings, according to David Kellum, an entomologist with the San Diego County (Calif.) Department of Agriculture.

In 1998, a 66-year-old nursing home patient in Jackson, Miss. died after being bitten hundreds of times by fire wants that swarmed over her while she lay in bed. Even one or two stings can cause swelling and sores that persist for weeks.

So, how do you eliminate these anti-social pests? The first step is proper identification. "There are as many ways to treat ants as there are species," says Mark Lacey, director of technical services with the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), near Washington, D.C. "Because some ants eat grease, others prefer seeds, other insects or leftovers from dinner, proper identification is a critical part of treatment."

Many homeowners would rather not spend a lot of time and money determining which common household products are best to remove ants from their home. For them, the most effective extermination solution is to call a local pest management professional for accurate identification and help.

But there are a number of do-it-yourself tips, according to Vincent Lazaneo, a pest management expert and an adviser with the University of California Cooperative Extension Service. Lazaneo stresses that ant management requires diligent effort and the combined use of mechanical, cultural, sanitation and, often, chemical methods of control. Among his tips:

To keep ants out of buildings, caulk cracks and crevices around foundations that allow entry from outside. Indoors, eliminate cracks and crevices wherever possible, especially in kitchens and other food-preparation and storage areas. Store sugar, syrup, honey and other sweets in closed containers that have been washed to remove residues from their exterior surfaces. Rinse out empty soft-drink containers and remove them from the building. Thoroughly clean up grease and spills. Take kitchen waste out daily when ants are a problem indoors. Look for indoor nesting sites, such as potted plants. If ants are found there, remove the plants and containers from the building, then submerge the infested pots for 20 minutes in water than contains a few drops of liquid soap. The effectiveness of baits varies with the ant species, bait material and availability of alternative food sources. An insecticide spray labeled for ant control will provide immediate knockdown of foraging ants. When applied by a professional, the ants should be controlled for about 30 days, depending on the species and severity of the infestation.

Follow these tips and you're sure to win the battle of the ants - at least for this season.
